Apart from documentary filmmakers, I know of only one camerawomen who works in other genres.

I'd be interested to hear some suggestions on why this might be?

Maybe girls just don't have the equipment!!

Seriously, high-end cameras are really heavy. You can't expect women to lift those around all day. Sorry.

The key word there is "a few". I've never seen a women behind the camera on a film or commercial set. In number terms how many are we really talking.

Dear Julia

Good to hear you're not afraid to tackle those cameras!

If you are looking for information and funding for script writing, you could try the SEDIBA programme run by the NFVF (National Film and Video Foundation) www.nfvf.co.za. I understand the contact is Pretty Samuels on prettys@nfvf.co.za or 011 483 0880.

Otherwise, the Gauteng Film Office might be a good resource for general information - www.gfo.co.za.

Let us know how it goes!
