As this year's ICEBOX moving image fest hots up and we try not to melt away into pixelated mush, we are pleased to announce that, in addition to artist and project features on the website and DVD, selected entries will appear in our media partners' publications - premier South African creative magazines Enjin and BRAND.

Submissions close in just over 6 weeks, so be sure to enter your music videos, documentaries, narrative pieces, abstract experimentations, VJ'd performances, and other instances of moving image in good time.

Whether you are a part-timer, student or professional, or express through film, video or animation, this is a level screening/playing field and we look forward to your participation. We also encourage all art collectives, festivals, media/film schools, and venues to contact us should they wish to take part or host a screening, and receive press coverage as an ICEBOX partner.

Please note that we will be accepting entries at our evening workshops on 27 July and 3 August at CAPE Africa in Cape Town (see [url=http://www.liquidfridge.co.za/upload]http://www.liquidfridge.co.za/upload[/url]), meaning you can meet like-minded folk and forego going postal at the same time. Just bring along your entries on DVD/CD, stills on CD, and a completed submission form for each entry (will be available if you cannot enter online or have not downloaded one).

In next month's update, we open the call for workshop presenters and performers at the AV club nights in Cape Town, Durban and Jo'burg.

Liquid Fridge, partnered with MTKidu and rustpunk, and endorsed by Creative Commons SA, presents ICEBOX 02 – an open, collaborative festival exploring the intersection of film, art, music and design in South African moving image. The festival will facilitate creative collisions of genres and artists in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg in November 2006 through screenings, audiovisual club nights and mini-workshops.

We have committed ourselves to providing an accessible space where independent South African creators can present their exploits. Now, we challenge you to participate!

Call for Entries

ICEBOX is calling for moving image work by both established and emerging South African artists, in the genres of Design/Experimental, Documentary, Music Video, Narrative, and VJ/Live. Entries must be submitted in digital format but may incorporate any non-digital means – 16mm, DV, claymation, stop-frame animation – anything goes. Innovation is the main criterion, whether through creative use of technology or a storyline with a twist.

We encourage all animators, storytellers, documentary filmmakers, bands and music video producers, VJs and experimental artists - student or professional - to take advantage of this opportunity to screen their work around South Africa. Collectives, festivals and media/film schools are also welcome to share their archive with us.

For the more open-minded artists, we also have a Creative Commons DVD compilation calling for source material and finished works. Internationally, artists like the Beastie Boys, Chuck D. and Pearl Jam have released their work under Creative Commons licence.

Entry is free, and you may submit multiple works. The final deadline is Friday 18 August 2006.

The SA – USA Business Link

Women In Film and Television – South Africa, in partnership with SAIBL (South African International Business Linkages) and the Cape Film Commission, is pleased to present the 2006 “SA – USA Business Link”. The exciting partnership initiative is designed to forge business opportunities with professionals in the USA and develop business skills for South African women in film and television. The offer is limited to 15 professionals from female owned SME’s in South Africa, actively involved in the field of film and television. This initiative will provide fifteen SME’s, who are WIFT-SA members, with an opportunity to travel to either Los Angeles or Washington DC, to work with business professionals and select industry advisors. A series of small meetings with be arranged to advance their business connections and knowledge. Film and television makers will also be given the opportunity to screen their works at selected venues in the USA.

Successful Candidates will receive the following:

• Assistance to travel to the United States of America in August 2006

• The opportunity to connect with established professionals in the US
• Needs Assessment from expert consultants prior to trip
• A workshop session on how to optimize business opportunities while in the USA.

Eligibility:

Candidates must meet the following criteria in order to be eligible for consideration:
• Member of WIFTSA
• Female owned SME involved in film, television or commercials

(Preferably established for a minimum of 2 years)
• Complete the profiling by Tuesday, 28 March 2006
• Must be available & eligible to travel to the USA in August 2006
• Must be available to attend workshops prior to travel

Reporting Requirements:

• On completion of the visit, participants must provide feedback and fill in questionnaires evaluating the impact of the program on them in terms of skill enhancements, information learned and contacts made
• Within twelve months of completing the program, participants must provide a final report that outlines new business relationships they have established and any commercial outcomes that can be related to the skills and contacts generated by the program

Application Process and Program Timeline:

Fully completed application packages must be submitted to WIFT-SA by Tuesday, 28 March 2006. Application forms to join WIFT-SA are available on the website.
A jury from SAIBL will review the applications.

The following documents must be submitted in order for your application to be fully considered:
• Completed two page profiling form
• Letter outlining what you would like to achieve while in the US, what companies you would like to visit

The organisers of ENCOUNTERS, the annual South African International Documentary Festival, are calling for entries from South African and International filmmakers for 2006,the 8^th edition of the festival.

ENCOUNTERS 2006 dates:

Johannesburg: Friday 14 July - Sunday 23 July
Cape Town: Friday 21 July - Sunday 6 August

ENCOUNTERS will show a selection of documentary films from around the world, with a particular focus on South African work. The festival will screen South African Premieres only.

Filmmakers must guarantee, should their film / video be selected, that permission from the rights holder are secured for a minimum of four screenings at this Festival.

The deadline for submissions is Friday 5^th May 2006
